Despite the wind, patchy clouds and glare, Clarke from Baltimore still had a great day on Mosquito Lagoon. This time of year we usually have slick calm mornings with the sea breeze coming on in the afternoon. Well the sea breeze decided to start early yesterday. Made it tough to see the Redfish until we were right on top of them. We did have brief moments of perfect sightfishing conditions and during those times, Clarke had some great shots at fish. After a few hours on the big flats we headed to the back country to fish some culvert flows. Great fun as Clarke hooked up on this nice sea trout on his first cast to one of my favorite little spots. He ended up with another sea trout and a couple nice lady fish on the fly.
The winds started to shift and lay down a bit, so we headed back out to the main flats for some more Redfish. With the improved conditions the fish were everywhere. Clarke had more good shots at fish and had one high teens Redfish eat the fly but no hook-up! So close!!! The weather took a turn for the worse as the dark afternoon clouds closed in on us. Back to the ramp and called it another great day on Mosquito Lagoon. Thanks Clarke and look forward to fishing with you again!
I still have dates available during July for Redfish, Tarpon, and Snook. Feel free to call or email me for my open dates.
It was so nice to be back on Mosquito Lagoon after a week in the North of chasing wild trout on the dry fly. Yesterday I had the pleasure to fish with the Ashton Brothers from Orlando, Fl. Kane and Kevin joined me early yesterday morning to chase Redfish on the flats of the Lagoon. This was Kane's second trip with me on the Lagoon and I knew he would tear them up. The 10-15 knot winds made it a little tough to see nervous water and tails, but it did not take long to get our first shot at some big tails. Kane and Kevin made some great casts at these fish but no takers. A bit more searching on the flat and we spotted another small group of tailing fish, great cast and Kane was hooked up! Good fight and lots of strong runs, but Kane handled this fish well. We then headed to a flat that has held big schools of Black Drum. However, with the chop and glare we had a hard time finding them.
Off to the back country we went to try and get out of the wind. It was a little more sheltered and it was full of fish!! Kevin made beautiful cast to a cruising fish and it slammed his bait. This fish made some huge runs in less then a foot of water. Kevin handled this fish very well and it soon came to hand. We tried to find some of the Bull Reds, but conditions were tough to see them and the thunderstorms were coming quick. Called it a day and headed back to the ramp. Nice work guys!!!!
I tell you, it is always great to fish with young anglers. Sure wish more parents would step up and introduce their kids to fishing. If you have a chance to take a kid fishing....please do it!!!
Today the Black Drum were chewing!!! This morning I fished with Pedro and his son Ruben from Titusville. FL. Always great to fish with young anglers and their parents. We started the day chasing Redfish and had some great shots a nice fish, but no Redfish to the boat today.
The Black Drum were next on our list and these guys got right after them. Pedro and Ruben both landed these hard pulling fish after several good fights on light tackle. Also got a nice Sea Trout amongst the huge schools of Black Drum. It was a pleasure fishing with you guys and I look forward to fishing with you both again soon!
The weather patterns are dialed in for Summer, which means beautiful mornings on the Lagoon and tailing fish you can see for miles. I still have dates available in July for Redfish, Black Drum, Snook, and Tarpon. You gotta get out and fish this time of year!!!
Today I had the pleasure to fish with Don and his son Luke from Hilo, Hawaii. Don made the long trip across the USA to visit family and he had to spend the day on Mosquito Lagoon. Don is in the fly fishing business in Hawaii and spends may days on the water chasing fish all around the islands. The chase continued for these guys and we first targeted the Redfish here in the Lagoon. We saw quite a few Redfish today and only one taker that busted Don off. We did however strike it rich with the Black Drum.
Our second stop of the day was loaded with big schools of Black Drum. It was not long and Don was hooked up. We played with these fish for a couple of hours and had some great action on the fly!
Another beautiful weather day and the fishing was just as good. Sure wish we would of got Don and Luke a Redfish today, but that's fishing for ya
Sorry for the delay on the fishing reports. My website guru went on vacation and the back end of my website crashed. So.... I was unable to update the site. Good news is, it is fixed and I am back on the keyboard.
Today I headed South a bit to check out a couple of new spots for Snook and Tarpon. Beautiful morning on the water and the fish were hungry. I covered a lot of water and found lots of great Snook and Tarpon habitat.
Could not help but to throw the fly a bit and it did not take long to get my first Snook of the day!!! Caught a few more Snook, Sea Trout, Mangrove Snapper, and came tight on one Tarpon but no hook up. Did see a few Tarpon rolling this morning. I will be back there with anglers for sure!!!
Early last week I fished with Mark and Karen from California. They were in town for a work conference and had to experience the grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon. Mark started out with the fly rod, but the wind picked up and we switched to light tackle. We had some good shots at a couple of nice schools of fish, but no players. The mix of clouds and sun, made it real tough to see that day. The Redfish were spooking before we could get a good look at them. Mark did get this nice Sea Trout and Karen had one on that we lost at the boat. These two learned a ton about sightfishing in shallow water and you will see them back again on their next trip to Orlando. Thanks guys!
The end of last week, Kevin from the Orlando area joined me again on Mosquito Lagoon. This was Kevin's third trip with me and man did his casting improve a ton!!! Practice, Practice, Practice.... and you will receive!!! What a day we had on the Lagoon. Kevin had shots and hook ups on Snook, Tarpon, Redfish, Black Drum, and Sea Trout. Crazy day!!!
The first few fish of the day on fly were ladyfish and this nice Sea Trout. Kevin's first on fly. He also caught his first Redfish on fly as well.
This little Redfish was so cool!!!!! I think that fish was the smallest Redfish I have ever had someone catch on fly. It was precious!!! What a fabulous day we had and Kevin almost got the ML Super Slam. Nice work my friend and I look forward to fishing with you again in August. Keep casting that fly rod and your success will grow even more.
The fishing is out of control good right now and with Snook and Tarpon in the mix, it gets that much more exciting on the water. I still have a few dates in June and July open, so give me a call or email to book your day.
It's just about that time of year!!! I still have a few dates open the last week of May. Snook, Redfish, Tarpon on fly. Give me a call or email and let's get out on the water. My new Scott X2s Rods are rigged and ready!!!
Baitfish have flooded the flats of Mosquito Lagoon and the trout have been ambushing the bait pods. I fish with Jason and his Dad the other day and he got his first Sea Trout on fly! It was their first taste of Saltwater fly fishing and you will see him back on the Lagoon again, he has got the fever. We saw some nice schools of Redfish and big schools of Black Drum. The wind picked up early afternoon which made it a little tough for casting the fly. These guys worked hard and each had a trout to show for it! Jason and his Dad learned a ton about this great sport. Look forward to fishing with you guys again!
Today I fished with Mark and Rod from Orlando. Again we saw good schools of Black Drum and Redfish, but no takers on the fly today. Mark did get one nice Sea Trout on light tackle, but he got off right at the boat.
Back on the Lagoon tomorrow with one of my regular clients Clark. Should be a great day on the water with Sunny skies and light winds in the forecast.
Still have some dates available the last week of May, so get your trip booked! See you on the water..
Today I fished with Bill and his nephew Billy from North Carolina. This was Bill's second trip with me on the Lagoon this Spring and we had much better weather then last trip. The fish were very happy today and chew'in on those jerk baits. Billy was first to put a fish in the boat today and a nice one it was. Screaming drag is all were heard for several minutes. Awesome first ML Redfish!!!
Bill was next with this nice fish and this fish was very hot as well. We saw some great tailing action as well as some huge schools of Redfish. These were two of several fish they landed today on the flats. Mosquito Lagoon is just loaded with baitfish and the Redfish are just pounding them.
I still have a few dates available this month, so get your trip booked. The fishing is very good right now!!! Life's to short not to fish!!!
Had a great day on the water with my buddy Tom aka... Angler X and outdoor filmmaker RA Beattie. Just a few hours on the water to test his new camera today and man did he get some good stuff. RA and I will be working on a couple of new projects this year. Just finished dinner and get an email from RA with this attached. RA has such eye for things with the camera and his creative talents are incredible. Nice work RA and I look forward to working with you! Enjoy this little video he created.
Made it back on Monday from a quick trip North to open the trout season in Michigan. It was good to see trout rising to the dry fly, but the tails just keep calling me South again. The weather has stabilized here in Central Florida and the Redfish are back to their normal behaviors. We have had great tailing action the last few days.
Tuesday I fished with Gary & Connie from Virginia. This was their third trip to Mosquito Lagoon and man did we have the shots at some nice fish. Connie made a beautiful cast to this fish pictured above and it inhaled her jerk bait . The wind was a bit of a challenge for accuracy, so no other fish to the boat that day. These two are always a pleasure to fish with and you will see them on the reports page again this season.
Yesterday I fished with Matt from Switzerland. Jet lag and all he jumped up on the casting platform for a day of chasing Redfish with the fly rod. Matt has fished all over the world and it was his first real sightfishing experience in the super shallow grass flats. We had some great tailing action all day and Matt hooked up on a couple of fish that quickly busted off. Not sure what happened, but that is the way it goes some days. We had an awesome day on the water and Matt will be back for sure to get his first Redfish on fly!
I still have a few dates open in May, so be sure to get your day booked. May will be an amazing month on the Mosquito Lagoon!!!
Busy week on Mosquito Lagoon for me and I finished up with a couple of first Redfish for my anglers! Dan and Billy from Buffalo, NY hit the Lagoon with me and we had a great evening session on the water. These guys were suppose to fish with me on Tuesday, but we had to cancel because of T-Storms and high winds. We had good sun most of the afternoon and saw a lot of nice fish. Billy took the money with this nice Redfish above. His first ever, Congrats again on a great cast to this fish that was tailing hard. Dan landed one nice trout and hooked a couple of huge Redfish, but they came unbuttoned. Good work guys and I look forward to fishing with you again on your next trip!
Today I was joined by Troy from Indianapolis. Troy is an avid fly fisher and this was his first trip to Mosquito Lagoon. We had some great shoreline action first thing in the morning and came so close to hooking up. Then as the sun got higher we headed to the open flats. Saw a lot of nice trout and then a huge school of Redfish appeared in front of us. Troy made a great cast and hooked up with a high teens fish that put him in his backing twice!!! Unfortunately that fish came unbuttoned. We found the school again and he hooked up on his second cast. His first Redfish on fly. We worked a couple more shorelines and had some adrenaline flowing moments, but no other fish to the boat. You will see Troy on the reports page again for sure.
I still have some May dates available so give me call or email to book your trip. The fishing should get even better as May arrives. Look forward to fishing with you!!
What a difference twelve hours can make in the weather. Yesterday I was forced to cancel my trip due to heavy thunderstorms and high winds. Needed some vise time, but would have much rather been out chasing tails. Today's weather was picture perfect for sightfishing. Today I was joined by Bruce and Mark from the Orlando area. These guys are avid flats anglers and did we have the shots at fish today. Mark was first to connect with a very nice Sea Trout that flopped off at the boat. Bruce was next to hook up with this ML Redfish pictured above.
We saw some great tailing action today, as most of the flats we fished were slick calm. Mark made an awesome cast and presentation to a small school of tailing fish and this fish above just hammered his jerk bait. Nothing like seeing those fish exploded in inches of water.
We ended the day with three nice redfish and a trout to the boat. Nice work guys and I look forward to fishing with you again soon. Looks like the rest of the week is going to be perfect weather! Can not wait!!!!
I still have April 20 available if you would like to hit the water. May dates are filling quick, so get your trip booked today.
Wrapped up the week with two great days on the water. I fished with Chris and his son Nick from Michigan on Thursday. This was Chris's second trip to Mosquito Lagoon, but his first with me. The morning started out a little tough to see, with some chop and overcast skies. But as the day went on, the conditions improved and we had perfect sightfishing. Both Chris and Nick had several hookups with Redfish and nice Trout. Nick was first to score with this nice Redfish below and his Dad followed up a few minutes later. We had such a wonderful day on the water. Thanks and I look forward to fishing with you again. I also look forward to introducing you guys to the sport of fly fishing!
I finished the week up with Bob and George from Deland, Florida. It was their first trip to Mosquito Lagoon sightfishing. The morning conditions were really tough. Just hard to see anything with the clouds and chop. Then about mid-morning the skies cleared and the fish were all over. Accuracy with the cast was a bit tough for these guys and we had several nice follows, but no commitments. Bob and George learned a ton about this sightfishing game and I am sure you will see them back to get revenge on these fish. Thanks guys!
Just want to wish all of you a happy Easter and hope you have a great day with your families! Vicki, Madison and I are headed to Sea World tomorrow. Should be a wonderful day!
Well, the forecast was right on the money today. Darn right cold for this time of year. 41 degrees was the temp, not including the wind chill. Man it was a cold ride to our first spot this morning. Today I fished with Jen from North Carolina and she did a number on these Mosquito Lagoon Redfish. With the cold temps overnight, the fish were back in their winter haunts and all schooled up. Jen hooked into several Redfish and landed five very nice fish.
As the morning went on, the winds laid down and the Lagoon went perfectly slick!!! It was perfect timing as the sun was high in the sky and the shallows started to warm quickly. This meant one thing, TAILS everywhere!!! Jen got out the fly rod and had lots of good shots at tailing fish. She had one fish eat and it spit the fly. Also saw lots of gator trout on the sandy spots today!! The fish were a bit spooky with the calm water, but we had some great action.
Nice work Jen and I look forward to fishing with you again on your next trip to Orlando! Here are my May dates I have open - may 1,2, 4-7,9,11-13. They are filling quick so get your day booked soon!
For all of you who are on twitter or should be on twitter, be sure to follow me and my fishing adventures. Got my Iphone all set up for live uploads right on the water. Great Fun!!!
One of my long time clients, 12 years now...man time moves quick, joined Capt. Scott and I yesterday on the Lagoon. Bill and his wife Carolyn fished with me for the first time on Mosquito Lagoon last year and we were blown off the water when the winds picked up to 25-30knots. This year Bill treated his son Greg and wife Donna to a day of fishing as well. With an approaching cold front, the winds were not too bad in the morning, but the overcast skies made it tough to see. We had lots of baitfish on the flats yesterday morning, but no one was snacking As the winds picked up the fly rods went in the rack and the light tackle rods came out.
We stopped in a nice sheltered cove for lunch and then hit the west shore for shelter from the wind. For about ten minutes the skies cleared and we could see Redfish all over in front of us. Bill made a long cast to some nice sand spots and hooked up on his first Redfish. Never give up I say!!! Just takes one cast, the right one to make your day. Capt. Scott was able to get Greg and Donna into some nice Sea Trout as well.
It is always such a pleasure to fish with Bill and his family! Look forward to our next trip and thanks again for fishing with us.
Looks like the weather is going to be very good the next few days. See you on the water!
This weekend I got to introduce another fly angler to the world of saltwater fly fishing. Gordon from Boulder, Colorado joined me on the Lagoon. Gordon is an avid fly fisher and took a day away from the crazy world of Mickey to experience the sightfishing game. The day started off a little windy but as the day progressed the wind laid down and the sun came out. We found most of our fish along the shorelines busting bait and it did not take long before Gordon was hooked up on his first Redfish on fly.
He had shots at a good number of other Redfish, but this was the only one to the boat today. However... he did make a great cast into a sand hole with a school of fish and hooked up on this nice Sea Trout. What a great start to this saltwater game!
Thanks again Gordon and I will be sure to look you up when I go to Denver in September. Would love to chase some trout with you on your home waters. Just two days available in April the 17th & 20th, May dates are filling up so Book your trip today.
The last day of March I fished with Dave from Michigan. We arrived at the Lagoon just before sunrise and we were greeted by a bit of wind and overcast skies. Tough conditions for the sightfishing game we play. We saw a few fish tailing early, but only a couple of shots. The winds picked up and switched a couple of times on us before it stabilized. Once that happened, the sun came out and we headed for the east shore of the Lagoon. Dave had some great shots at Redfish and we saw some big trout laying in the shallows. One hook up and quick release was all we got that day. Dave learned a ton on his first trip ever on the saltwater flats. He will be back on his next trip South for sure. The salt addiction has started!!!!
Yesterday I had the pleasure to fish with RA Beattie and his Dad. RA is one of the most creative young fly fishing film makers in the business. You can check out his work on his WEBSITE - BEATTIE PRODUCTIONS RA and I will be working on a couple of new video projects together and I am very excited to have him on the team. Can not wait to see the finished product!!!!
I only have April 17 & 20 open this month and my May dates are booking up as well. Get your day booked and let's go chase some tails!!!
Yesterday I fished with John and Greg from the Orlando area. These guys were ready to cast the fly rod for Redfish, but the winds were just too strong. So.. the light tackle rods came out of the holders. With the low light in the morning, we hit some of the spots I had been seeing some nice schools of Redfish. At the second stop of the day, John hit this real nice fish below.
These guys worked hard for fish yesterday and it paid off. Greg had several hits and then he finally hooked up on his first Redfish ever. Congrats Greg!!!! That was just the start of his new fishing Karma Thanks guys and I look forward to getting you back on the water in perfect sightfishing conditions.
Mike Camera joined me again for an evening session on the Lagoon. Mike arrived at the ramp just in time to see the Space Shuttle come in for a landing. It was awesome!!! The winds were still howling so we headed back in the mangroves to get out of the wind. We did see a number of fish working the shorelines and had some great shots, but no fish to the boat. The day ended with a beautiful sunset on the Lagoon. Only have a few dates left in April, so book your trip soon!!!!
This was the view we were blessed with yesterday morning. I have had the pleasure to fish with my long time client Mike Camera for the last two days. You have seen Mike on this reports page before and I am sure you will see him again this summer. With the high water as of late, the fish are on the move all over Mosquito Lagoon. So.... Mike and I followed the fish to the backcountry shorelines. Man did we see some great action the last two days. The Redfish are just pounding the small baitfish on the shorelines. It is so cool to see these fish just explode bait in the air. Talk about heart thumping moments!!!
Mike had so many great shots at fish and some awesome follows in inches of water. We had a big fish break off right near the boat, but Mike came through with this nice fish and one other fish today. Great days on the water, thanks Mike and look forward to seeing you again this Summer. I feel a Tarpon in your future!!!!
April dates are almost gone, book your trip today!
Yesterday I had the pleasure to fish with local anglers Mark and Rody Johnson. We had a great day chasing Redfish in the shallows and Mark landed one nice Redfish. The wind picked up as the day went on which made it tough to be accurate with the fly rod. We saw some big schools of Redfish on the flats and also saw some Gator trout laid up in the shallows. You will see these guys on the Lagoon again for sure. Thanks guys!!!
Today I had a last minute cancellation, which means the Capt. gets to throw the fly!!! I asked my good friend Tom to join me today for a backcountry scouting trip. The water levels have come up a bunch in the Lagoon, which means the fish have spread out into the areas that were dry or very shallow just a week ago. Tom and I headed to the back this morning and found good numbers of fish busting bait on the shorelines. Talk about fun!!!
Tom is a great fly angler and it did not take him long to get hooked up on his first of six Redfish to the boat today. Nice work my man!!! All of the fish we hooked were pounding bait and we could see them just cruising down the shore way in the distance. My little black and purple clouser was the hot fly.
It is great to see good numbers of baitfish already showing up in the Lagoon. These fish are really starting to key in on them. Should be a great rest of the week on the water. I still have a few dates in April, but they are filling up quick. Get your trip booked today, the fishing is very good!!!
Hopefully this was our final cold front on the season!!! The fishing has been good the last couple of days despite the wind, rain, and cooler temps. Yesterday I had the pleasure to fish with my Dad, the man that started this addiction I have to the fly rod. The overcast skies and wind made it tough to fly cast, so the light tackle rods came in handy. We only had a couple of hours to fish, but it was not long and he hooked up on this nice sea trout. We saw lots of tailers, but it was hard to get the cast in the zone without spooking them. Dad did hook a nice redfish and battled him for a few minutes, but he came unbuttoned. Great time and always good to get him out on the water.
Today I fished with local anglers Frank and Bill. These guys were troopers as we were greeted with 15knot winds and rain this morning. Coastal showers they call them. Our first stop of the morning produced several strikes and Frank boated this nice redfish. We had a good school of fish around us, but they were hard to see with the overcast conditions. So we were off to our next spot.
The weather started to clear as we began fishing our next spot and the tails started waving. Bill and Frank had some great shots at redfish, but the highlight was this nice Black Drum Bill hooked up, battled, and landed. His first Black Drum ever!!! As you can see from the photo, the rain and overcast skies moved back in and the wind picked up!! We made the best of a tough weather day and had a great time. Thanks guys and I look forward to fishing with you again in much warmer weather. Back on the water tomorrow chasing tails. I still have dates in April so get your trip booked today!
This was the start of my week on Mosquito Lagoon. What an awesome shuttle launch we experienced. My parents are in town this week and I took the whole family out to see this evening launch on the water. Very cool!!!
We have had great weather this week and the fish have been tailing most of the day. Also, still seeing some nice schools of Redfish and Black Drum. Crab and small baitfish patterns have been working very good.
Yesterday I fished with Jay from Sarasota and we really got into a huge school of Redfish in the afternoon. The morning session was a little tough with the overcast skies and chop. When the sun came out in the afternoon, it was game on!!! Jay landed 5 nice redfish and hooked up on a bunch more. What a blast!!!
Today I fished with Chuck and his nephew Robbie. Chuck is now officially a regular and is truly addicted to fly fishing the flats. It is awesome to see people have that passion for this sport. We had slick calm conditions most of the day and saw a lot of tailers in super shallow water. Robbie picked up this nice Trout first thing in the morning. Good way to start the trip.
The highlight of the day was Chuck's battle with a big Black Drum. As you can see from the photo above, this fish had his 9wt bent to the cork!!! Chuck spent twenty minutes fighting this fish, had it to the boat and the hook pulled out. What a bummer!!! He did everything right, just happens some times. Nice work guys and I look forward to fishing with you again.
Looks like we will have some stronger winds for the next couple days, but next week looks good. Only have a couple of days left this month, so get your trip booked. April dates are still available, so give me a call or email.
Yesterday we were greeted by slick calm conditions until mid-afternoon. Jim, Craig and Charley from Michigan joined Capt. Bryan and I for some sight fishing. We saw lots of tailers and had great shots at nice redfish. Craig did land his first redfish on fly and these guys also switch to light tackle and caught some black drum.
Jim and I stalked tailers all day and he learned a ton about the sightfishing game. It is all about a quick delivery and accuracy at 20-40ft!!!! We had so many exciting moments, but no fish on the fly! You will see Jim back again for sure, he is addicted!!!
Nice fishing with you guys and look forward to fishing with you again this season. I only have a couple of days left this month and April is filling up so get your trip booked today.
It was so nice to be back on the Lagoon after a quick trip North for the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo. Out of the snow and cold, Yes!!!
Yesterday we were blessed with perfect sight fishing conditions. Slick calm water and lots of tailing redfish on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. Tom and his wife Gloria joined me for their first saltwater flats trip ever. They could not have pick a better day. Some guys just have the fish mojo and Tom is one of them. I set the boat down on the first flat of the day, tied on one of my favorite morning flies, poled about 100 feet and the tails started appearing. Tom made his first cast of the morning to a nice school of tailers, a little short, he cast again and it was fish on. This redfish put Tom in his backing twice!!!
What a great way to start the day. We casted to tons of tailers all day and had some really exciting moments. No other fish to the boat yesterday, but Tom and Gloria learn a bunch about sightfishing in the salt. It was a pleasure fishing with you guys and I look forward to your next trip South.
I still have a few dates left this month, so get your trip booked today. The conditions on the Lagoon are perfect!!! Water is up a bit and the fish have spread out into the shallows looking for a snack!
Well, we had another cold front roll through on Sunday late and we are still feeling the effects. Cool morning today with temps in the low 40's, so we started a bit later to catch the heat of the day during our trip. Today I fished with Jim and his son Kane from Orlando. With the colder water temps the fish were schooled up tight and these guys got right after them. Kane scored first with this nice fish and hit another great fish pictured below.
With winds right out of the North at 15knots+ and the sun in the South, we were casting into the winds most of the day. Tough casting, but these guys were getting it done. We had several hook ups at our first spot as the school we were fishing to was HUGE!!!!
After a couple of thumps, Jim got hooked up on this nice Mosquito Lagoon redfish. Jim also made a perfect cast on a good sized tailing redfish and it whipped around and hammered his jerk bait in 8 inches of water. Great fun to see that fish eat!! My photo of this fish was blurred by a water spot, so I will have to wait for Jim's shot to post the photo of that fish. (Got the photo - below)
What a great day of fishing!!! Thanks guys and I look forward to fishing with you both again. Off to the North tomorrow for a fly fishing show and will be back on the water next Tuesday.
Take a look at those calendars and get your trip booked today!
Just one thing missing in this photo, YOU!!! I still have a few dates available this month - March 13,14,20,21,30. Book your trip before they are all gone
Yesterday I fished with Jamie from the DC area and did we see tailing fish!! All day long we were chasing tailers. Every time I see one of those beautiful tails glistening in the sun, it still feels like the first time I saw one. The heart starts to race and the adrenaline start to flow!!! Jamie made some great presentations and got six fish to eat, but no fish to hand. He had one on for a good bit and it spit the hook. The wind picked up as the day went on which made it a little tougher with accuracy and getting that first cast in the zone. Jamie did a great job for his first trip to Mosquito Lagoon and really improved his skills as the day went on. Thanks for fishing with me Jamie and look forward to fishing with you again on your next trip to Orlando.
I will be on the water early this week and then I will be headed North to the Midwest Fly Fishing Expo to do a couple of presentations. Hopefully the weather will warm up a bit before I get there. Wishful thinking, I know. Vicki and my daughter Madison will also be making the trip North, which will be very nice. Little Madison just loves fish, imagine that! She will get to see tons of them next weekend at the show. Great fun for Daddy and Madison!!!
Take a break from work and get out and fish! See you on the water.
It was nice to be back on the water after a couple of days in the office doing paperwork! The part of the guide business this time of year that none of us like much. Almost done!!! Anyway, yesterday I had the pleasure to fish with Geoff from the UK. This was Geoff's second time Redfishing in the salt and we had a great day on the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon. It was not 15 minutes into the day and he hooked up on his first ML Redfish. This fish just slammed the fly and took some very strong runs. The water levels were even lower on the east side of the Lagoon with the wind directly out of the east. The fish were in huge schools yesterday and we had tons of shots at nice fish. No other fish to the boat yesterday, but we had so many exciting moments.
Thanks Geoff and hope you have a great trip in Ft. Myers with Capt. Rick DePavia. Look forward to fishing with you on your next trip to Orlando!
Here are my dates I still have available in March: 12,13,14,20,21,24,30 Get your trip booked today!!!
Hey Everyone! I just wanted to let you know that I just created a new GROUP on Facebook called " Fly Fishing Mosquito Lagoon". For those of you that are on Facebook do a search on this and join. Look forward to seeing all the photos, stories, and tips for fly fishing Mosquito Lagoon. Hope to see you on FACEBOOK.
Patrick and Lou joined me yesterday on the Lagoon for another day of sight fishing. We had great conditions all day long. High sun and much lighter winds then the day before. However, the fish were a bit more spooky and presentations need to be right on the money. We had a few quick hook ups on Redfish and one trout on that spit the hook. No fish to the boat yesterday. We had shots at lots of fish and some great heart pumping action which is worth it all on it's own. These guys were just happy to be out and enjoying that father and son time that is so great to have. It was a pleasure fishing with you guys and I look forward to doing it again in the future. Keep working on that fly cast and we will go at them again!!!!
This week looks good weather wise and the Redfish are ready to eat a well presented fly. Get your trip booked today, the tails are waiting for you!!!
Have a great week and look forward to seeing you on the water.
Today I fished with Patrick and his Dad Lou in some not so perfect weather. We had high sun but the winds were blowing right out of the North at 20+ knots. So, plans of sightfishing with the fly rod were quickly changed to light tackle. It did not take Patrick long to get his cast in the groove and he was hooked up. The first fish was very large and busted him right off. Got him rigged back up and a few casts later he was hooked up again and this nice fish above made it to hand.
With the cool morning temps the fish were all schooled up again and we had a hoot catching one after another. These guys had great fun with these fish. We cut the day a little short, however the fishing was very good today! Patrick and Lou will be back at it tomorrow in much better conditions. Less wind and warmer temps are in the forecast.
Take a look at those calendars and get your trip booked today!
How could you not think it was going to be a great day with this beautiful sunrise on Mosquito Lagoon. Yesterday was one of those days that everything that could go right did and Kent was on his game!!!
I have heard a lot of fishing stories over the years, and told a few myself, but this one is true. The first cast of the day resulted in this beautiful redfish glowing in the morning sunrise. What a start to the day and it only got better.
It was an amazing day with an excellent fly angler that has this sightfishing game dialed in. Kent had some great shots a huge Sea Trout as well, but no takers. They are a real challenge in the cystal clear water. To top the day off, we were poling off the flat in the last minutes of the trip and we see a nice fish start pushing a good size wake. Kent made the perfect cast, two strips and he hammered my new crab pattern I just tie up!! Guess it works.
What a pleasure fishing with you Kent. Thanks again and look forward to seeing you later in the year! Still have days available next week and in March as well. Book your trip, the fishing is good!!!
Man.... two trips in a row now that my anglers have caught their first Redfish on Fly. Congrats!!!! Yesterday I fished with Nate and Brad, good long time customers of mine. It is always such a pleasure to fish with these boys!!! This was Nate's first time fishing the salt and he hit this nice Redfish on his 5th cast of the day. Awesome!!!
We had slick calm conditions and high sun most of the day. Mid-afternoon, the wind switched directions and really picked up. Both these guys landed fish today and had lots of shots at tailing fish in super skinny water. Great fun!!!! Thanks guys and look forward to fishing with you again this season. Those snook and tarpon are calling your name.
We have some rain and clouds on us today, but the front should be cleared out by morning. Should have some good fishing again tomorrow.
Still have few days left this month and March is filling up, so get your trip booked!
It is always so great to see an angler accomplish this task with the fly rod. Today I fished with Martin from Michigan. Not only did he get his first redfish on fly, he got his second as well. Nice work Martin. We had perfect conditions today with light winds and not a cloud in the sky. Martin had lots of great shots at schools, tailers and fish just hanging out on the many white spots. Martin could not of pick a more perfect day for his first trip to Mosquito Lagoon. He will be back for sure!!!
The weather looks like it will hold for tomorrow and we should have great fishing as well. Take a look at those calendars and get your trip booked. These fish are all over a well presented fly!!
Today I had the pleasure to fish with Kent and Johnny. Kent came all the way from Alaska and Johnny is from the great fly fishing state of Montana. These guys had been chasing fish the last few days and decided to join me for some sightfishing with the fly rod. Wow..... did we have big fun. These guys are old college buddies from Montana and they love to catch fish on the fly. And they did just that today. Kent started out with this trout and then he hit this nice redfish at our third stop of the day. We watched this fish track the fly a good 20 feet before he ate. Awesome fun!!
I must say that Johnny gets most of the glory today. He made a perfect presentation to this GATOR sea trout just sitting on the edge of a white sandy spot. Two strips and this big dog was all over the fly!! Now that was something to see!!!
We had a lot more shots at tailing redfish and big trout. It was Kent that finished off the day with another good redfish that was working his way across some super skinny water. Nice work boys and I look forward to doing it again on your next trip.
Stan was back on the water with his father, Don today and we had some big fun with the Mosquito Lagoon redfish and sea trout. Don at age 77 , man I hope I look that good at 77, went right at it when we got to our first spot of the day. First he landed a trout, and then this nice redfish. Both these guys put a hurt on these fish today.
It is always so great to see a father and son hit the water together. That is what life is all about. Enjoying family and the great outdoors together.
We fished a bunch of big schools today and had a great time. I just want to thank you guys again for joining me today. Look forward to fishing with you again. Still have a few days left this month, so take some time off and hit the water. The fishing has been very good and the weather is looking perfect for sightfishing with the fly rod.
Today I fished with Peter from Virginia. This was Peter's second trip with me on Mosquito Lagoon and we had much better weather this year. High sun and minimal winds made it great for sightfishing today. The fish were a little spooky today so long casts were needed with the fly rod. Peter did have some great shots at fish, but the wind was straight out of the North which made it tough for him to get that cast were it needed to be. So we got out the light tackle gear and it was not long before he had his first fish on!!! We fished some big schools today and had several takes, but this was the only redfish to the boat.
Peter also caught this nice Sea Trout that was just hanging on a white spot ready to ambush his jerk bait. We saw lots of big trout again today and they were a little spooky as well. The fish should be settled down a bit tomorrow after the weekend. It was great fishing with you Peter and I look forward to fishing with you again on your next trip to Orlando.
Another awesome day on the Lagoon and I had the pleasure to fish with Gert from Atlanta , Georgia. Gert is a transplant from Denmark and he can flat out cast. This was Gert's first trip Mosquito Lagoon and he hit it on a perfect day. We had light winds and high sun all day. It was not three casts into our morning and he hit his first fish of the day! Then another and another and another within the first hour. The cool mornings still have the fish schooled up and we took full advantage of the opportunity.
There were also some nice Sea Trout sitting in the sandy spots on the flat and Gert made a perfect presentation to this trout that just hammered the fly. He also had a huge trout totally shear his leader clean!!! Amazing power those fish have.
Off to our next flat to look for tailers and we had some great shots at redfish and then we saw this nice black drum tailing in the shallows. Gert made the perfect cast and this fish inhaled my new shrimp fly. Great fight and good strong runs before this fish came to hand. That fish sealed the ML Slam. The first one of the 2009 Season. Nice work Gert and thanks again for fishing with me!!!! Look forward to your next visit. If you are up for trying a slam, give me a call or email to book your trip!!!
The weather forecast just keeps improving and the warmer temps are headed our way. Should only make these fish happier!!
Today, Stan from Illinois joined me on the Lagoon for a day of sightfishing. This was Stan's first trip with me on the Lagoon and his mission was to fish to tailing Redfish. Man did we see them today after the day warmed up. With the end of the cold front right on us, the morning was a bit cool and I am not sure we got to 60 degrees today. However, the sun was out in full force and the shallow flats were warming as the day went on.
First thing we hit one of my morning spots that has been holding a good number of schools and with the cooler water temps they were really schooled up. Stan got right after them and with good presentations landed several from this school on fly. What a hoot and great way to get the day started.
Then we went chasing these. Saw lots of tailers in super skinny water and lots of fish with their backs clear out of the water soaking up the sun. Stan made some great casts and hooked one huge sea trout that came unbuttoned!!!
When it was all done we had 5 nice redfish to the boat. Awesome day on fly for sure. Nice work Stan!!! He will be back on the water again on Monday. Look forward to it and the warmer weather. Tomorrow will be in the mid 70's which should have these fish happy as ever. I still have a few dates left this month and in March, so book your trip today.
Today was one of the most interesting days I have had on the Lagoon in a while. When Chris and I started off the day we had moderate winds and light rain. The fish were mostly laying around on the flat with an occasional tail here and there. It seemed like we were spooking fish left and right. We did have a few nice strikes on light tackle but no hook-ups.
But after lunch was a different story!!! It was crazy, the wind laid right down and the rain picked up. Totally wild!!!! Once that flat laid down calm, up came the tails!!! For the next two hours Chris made one cast after another to big tails. Finally it all came together and this nice Redfish eat one of my new shrimp patterns. After a good long run into the backing he came to hand.
Looks like another cold front is moving in tomorrow, but should be out of here on Thursday night. Today was a great start for the month of February!!!
I was honored the other day, to be able to guide Amy & Rob on their first wedding anniversary. These two have been long time clients of mine and have become good friends as well. The weather could have been a little better for the day, but that's fishing for you.
We fished on the front end of a cold front which meant North winds and cloudy skies most of the day. We saw a lot of fish, but getting the cast in the strike zone was really tough. These guys did have several strikes and a few fish on, but none to boat that day. We had a fantastic day despite the weather. The day was filled tons of good laughs and stories. I tell you, it is such a pleasure to fish with all of you. Spending the day with great people is by far the best part of my job.
The fishing this month should be every bit as good as it was in January. The water levels should remain low, which means tailing redfish all day long!!!
I still have dates available this month and in March. They are filling up, so make sure you get your trip book ASAP!
This last cold front really put the Redfish in winter schooling mode. We are seeing nice schools tailing in the shallow flats all day long. The temps the last few days have been in the upper 70's and great sun for sightfishing with the fly rod.
I fished with Chadwick from Ohio the other day and we had lots of good shots at tailing fish, but no fish to the boat. We only fished a few hours because of Chad's work commitment , but he got a good taste of what the Lagoon is all about. You will see him back here for sure!!!! Thanks man!!!
Yesterday I fished with one of my local anglers Clark. He is starting to be regular on this reports page and I thank him a bunch!!! Clark has really improved his sightfishing game and time on the water is the only way to make that happen. As you can see, he accomplished his goal again. The winds were a little challenging yesterday for accuracy, but as I say, that just makes you a better caster. The only way to get good at casting in the wind is to do it. We had tons of adrenaline rushing moments and two nice takes!!! One fish to hand on the trip, but lots of great opportunities. Nice work Clark!! Crab patterns got the most strikes yesterday.
Looks like we have a cold front moving in tonight which should bunch those fish back up again. It will be good fun for sure!! My dates are filling for February and March so if you are looking to book a day give me a call or email.
Dean from Boston, Mass joined me yesterday on Mosquito Lagoon. Dean was down with his wife on business and took a day to experience sightfishing the Lagoon with the fly rod. The morning temps were again a bit cool, but the fish were still willing to hit a slow strip. We fished a big school first thing and Dean hit three nice fish on the fly. As the day warmed up we hit the shallow flats in search of tailing fish. Dean had several shots at big tails, but no takers!!! Another great day at the office. Thanks Dean and I look forward to your next visit.
I still have a couple of days open next week and February dates are starting to fill. Take a day and enjoy this awesome fishery we have here!
Today was a different story weather wise then the last couple of days. The morning temps were a bit cool, but we had calm winds and slick conditions. Perfect for hunting tailers. As you can see by the photo above, Ben was at it again today. His last day on the water and he hit this beautiful fish in eight inches of water. It was so cool to see this fish just hammer a well presented shrimp pattern.
We chased tailers for a few hours today and then we decided that we would go and hunt the fish that Mosquito Lagoon is famous for, the BIG BULL REDS!!! These fish can be very tough to catch on fly, however if there is one angler I know that could make it happen, it would be Ben. So off we went to one of the many spots that hold these bruisers this time of year.
I tell you the fish gods were on our side these last few days. It was not two minutes after we set down on this flat and this huge fish appears out of no where. Ben made the perfect presentation to this fish and he just inhaled a five inch deceiver. Ben did an awesome job fighting this fish and after several runs we landed this trophy fish. Crazy!!!!!!!
What a great three days we had on Mosquito Lagoon. Ben, it was a pleasure fishing with you and I look forward to putting you on some Tarpon and Snook this summer. Great work with that fly rod man!!! Safe Travels and we will see you soon.
Get in on this great fishing, book your trip today!! If you are headed to Orlando give me a call or email!!!
They were not kidding when they said an arctic chill was headed to Florida. Today when we hit the Lagoon the temps were in the high 30's. Man was it cold on the ride to our first spot of the day. I tell you it was worth the pain. Ben made two casts and it was fish on!!! Who says Redfish won't eat flies in cold weather.
I will have to say the highlight of the day was this huge!!!!! Sea Trout that eat a well presented glades minnow. This time of year is awesome for sightfishing these big fish in really shallow water.
Ben's goal today was to top his six fish day yesterday and he blow it out of the water. As you know presentation is everything in this game we play and he had it dialed in.
This was the big redfish of the day and after seven or eight big runs I tailed this beauty. Well... Ben gets to play one more day before he heads back to the snowy north.
The weather looks great for the next week so take a look at your calendars and book your trip today. Look forward to fishing with you!
Usually with the cold fronts comes higher then normal winds and today was no exception. Joining me on the Lagoon was my good friend, client, and colleague from Michigan, Ben Hunting. Now, I have to tell you, with 30 plus knot winds most anglers would have thrown in the towel, but not Ben. This guys can flat out cast, wind or no wind.
We tucked out of the wind as best we could and went right after the Redfish. The water temps were a bit chilly first thing but, warmed as the day went on. After a couple of spots with minimal fish action, we headed to one of my honey holes and it was loaded with fish!!! Man did we have a blast with a school of several hundred Redfish. Ben made some huge casts and perfect presentations! At the end of the day we had 6 nice Redfish to the boat!!!!
The beautiful thing is that we get to do it again the next couple of days. Weather should be a lot better tomorrow and Thursday's forecast is for slick calm conditions. Can not wait!!!!
The water levels in Mosquito Lagoon continue to drop and my fly anglers are loving it. Today my good friend and client from Michigan, Gary joined me tfor his first trip to the Lagoon. Gary and his wife Megan spend the winter in the Keys and I finally got him to stop on the trip down to chase some Redfish.
He will definitely be making the stop again next year. We had an awesome day hunting tails and when it was all said and done, Gary landed his third Redfish on fly as the sun was starting to set.
The fish are on the feed coming off the last cold front and they are just hammering small crab and shrimp patterns. My good friend and fly tyer Bear Andrews came up with a new shrimp pattern for me and it is deadly. I look forward to putting it to the test again tomorrow.
If you are headed to the Orlando area give me a call or email. Book your trip today, the fishing just keeps getting better!!!
Felt good to be back on the flats yesterday after a quick trip to Indianapolis for a fly fishing show and presentation at FlyMasters of Indianapolis. I was joined by Bill and Alex from Long Island, NY who came down to run the Disney half marathon. This was their first trip to Mosquito Lagoon and we went right at these fish.
The conditions were a little tough to start with 15knot winds out of the North, but as the day went on they kept improving. These guys had some good shots at tailing redfish with the fly rod and also landed four nice trout on light tackle.
With about an hour to go in the trip the winds laid down a bit, so I headed to one of my favorite afternoon tailing flats. It was not two minutes on the flat and the tails started to waving. Alex was up first and had several shots at beautiful tails, but no takers!! Bill was up next and made a great presentation to a school of five tailers and it was fish on!!! His first redfish on fly came to the boat after four great runs. What a way to finish their first trip to the Lagoon. Nice work guys and I look forward to fishing with you again on your next trip to Orlando.
I have a couple of days open this week if your interested in hitting the water. Give me call or email to book your trip!!!
That seems to be the trend on Mosquito Lagoon so far this year. Slick calm conditions and lots of tailing fish have been the norm lately. That is a beautiful thing for us fly fishers!
Yesterday I fished with Ryan from California. As you can see by the photo above, we had nirvana like conditions most of the day. Ryan is a pro staff employee at Bob Marriotts Fly Shop in Fullerton, Ca. and was here on vacation with his family. Ryan had great shots at tailing schools of Reds most of the morning. Ryan made some beautiful casts to several tailers and had Six solid hook ups. Unfortunately, no fish to the boat yesterday. Ryan will be back for sure on his next trip to get even with those fish! Great day on the water and a pleasure to fish with you Ryan!!!
Well.... today was a different story! Norman and his Dad Duane were back on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon with a bit of experience under their belt. Norman was up first and he went right after them. Today we a had a little more wind 5-10 knots, but the fish were all over the flats in nice little schools. Was not long and Norman was hooked up with his first fish of the day.
Then after several more shots at nice groups of tailing fish, he hit the best fish of the day. After several good runs, including one right at the boat, this big ole Redfish came to hand.
Duane made some great presentations and hooked up several times, but none to the boat today. Well, one to the boat, but it busted off on the trim tab so no photo.
Norman finished off the trip with this nice fish on the last flat of the day. What an awesome two days of fishing we had. It was a real pleasure fishing with you guys and I look forward to fishing with you again on your next trip to Orlando. I wanted to mention that Norman is the Head Guide for the High Desert Angler out in Santa Fe, New Mexico. If you get out that way be sure to fish with him. You can reach him through the High Desert Angler
One more day on the Lagoon this week and then it is time to head North!!! Burrrrr! I think it is going to be really cold in Indy.
I still have some dates in January, so book your trip today! Look forward to fishing with you.
Norman Maktima and his Dad Duane joined me today for their first time sight fishing on Mosquito Lagoon. Norman is a member of the Fly Fishing Team USA and he put those skills to work today! These guys put a hurt on these ML Redfish.
We fished both tailers and bigggggggggggggg schools of Redfish. These fish are definitely in the wintertime mode. Norm and Duane made some great presentations today and they paid off. Four Redfish and a Sea Trout came to the boat today. Fabulous day of fishing and a beautiful day as well.
These guys will be joining me again on Tuesday this week for another day, so make sure you check back to see how they do on day two.
I will be flying up to Indy the end of this week to give a presentation at FlyMasters of Indianapolis and also exhibiting at the "Indiana on the Fly" fly fishing show . Here is the info from FlyMasters WEBSITE .
Join Capt. Todd Fuller for a casual evening at FlyMasters as he shares the techniques and secrets that fool spooky fish on the saltwater grass flats of Florida. Whether it’s Redfish, Bonefish, Tarpon, or any other fish that you pursue in the salt, you will not want to miss this evening!
Capt. Todd Fuller will be at the shop on January 8th, 2009. The evening will start at 4:00pm and run until about 7:00pm. It is free to everyone. Stop by and learn about one more great place to go fishing this next year!
So if your in the area, come on out and see me. I will be at the fly fishing show on Saturday, January 10th as well. Look forward to meeting everyone and sharing a little warmth and sunshine. Well in the photos at least!!!
What a beautiful morning we had yesterday to start the 2009 season on Mosquito Lagoon. The winds were light, our first flat of the day was slick calm and full of tailing Redfish.
Clark from Windermere, Florida joined me yesterday morning and was amazed at all the tails. We had great tailing action on our first flat for several hours and I tell ya it still makes my adrenaline rush!!
Clark made some great presentations to fish and hooked up on two nice redfish that busted him off. One other fish totally eat the fly and for some reason did not get hooked Well, that is sight fishing for ya! Clark did however catch this nice Sea Trout on fly. Nice work Clark and I look forward to fishing with you again the end of the month!!!
I still have some dates available in January, so if you would like to chase some Redfish in super skinny water give me a call. If your New Year's resolution is to improve your casting, I can help you with that as well.
The first day of a new year always makes me reflect on all the things that happened over the last 365 days. Man did we have some great fishing in 2008. I would like to thank everyone that fished with me this season and I look forward to fishing with you again in 2009. I have put together a little slide show from the 2008 Season on YouTube and you can see it below. I am sure you will enjoy the photos and the memories of your trip!
I took the day off today to spend with my family and bring in the New Year with the ones that mean the most to me. I feel really fortunate to have such a supportive wife, a precious little daughter, and all the great clients that love to chase fish with the fly rod!!!
Thanks again for choosing me to guide you on Mosquito Lagoon and for those of you that I have not met yet, I look forward to fishing with you in 2009!!!
December has been as good as it gets here in Central Florida. We have had a few cold fronts, but for the most part we have had excellent conditions for sightfishing here on Mosquito Lagoon.
Mike and Chris from Ann Arbor, Michigan were fortunate enough to hit some of these awesome weather days. We had great conditions both days they fished with me. This was their first trip to Mosquito Lagoon and the fish were all over the flats tailing.
Mike and Chris had lots of shots at very nice fish and some great knee shaking action. Both of these guys landed their first Mosquito Lagoon redfish, had several other hook ups, bust offs, and just plain good fun in the sun.
Thanks for fishing with me guys and I look forward to fishing with you again in the future. If you are heading to the Orlando area give me a call or email to book your trip.
Every morning I wake up and thank GOD for what I have been given. A beautiful wife and child, a job that allows me to share my passion with people, and an office that is hard to explain until you experience! Yesterday....... was no exception.
Chuck from St. Cloud, one of my local fly clients, decided to blow off the afternoon of work in search of his first Redfish on Fly. As you will remember from a report a few weeks ago, Chuck hooked three fish on his last trip and busted off all of them. As you can see we had perfect slick calm conditions and the tails were up all over the flat.
Chuck had shot after shot at tailing fish all afternoon and made some great presentations, despite the serious "BUCK FEVER". However, he made that perfect cast, a perfect strip, strip, and it was fish on!!!
I think you could hear my "OH YEA" all the way to Orlando!!! It is always a special moment for me and the fly angler when you see that first nice Redfish inhale your fly. It was a good long fight in inches of water and the fish came to hand.
Nice work Chuck!!! You are now official addicted. Thanks again for fishing with me and I look forward to our next trip. I still have a few days left this month so, book your trip today. The fishing is as good as it gets right now.
The last few days here in Central Florida have been , shall I say, PERFECT for fly anglers sightfishing the flats.
Yesterday, Evan and Lowell from the "BIG CITY" in New York, joined me for a day of fishing on the Lagoon. This was their first time sightfishing for Redfish in the shallow flats and they could not of designed a better day. It was a quick run from the ramp to the first stop of the day. As I started poling, the first tail appeared in the distance. The morning sun was just sparkling off that spotted tail. That is a beautiful sight to see!!!
That was one of many tails Evan casted to during the day. He had a some beautiful presentations to tailed up fish and two nice fish that charged the fly, but no fish to the boat. It is always nice to land your first redfish on fly, but the adrenaline rush of stalking that "big ole" tail in the distance is hard to beat!!
You will see Evan back again to get his first Mosquito Lagoon Redfish on fly for sure!!! Thanks guys and I look forward to your next trip.
I still have a few days open before the New Year, so give me a call or email to book your day on the water!! Conditions are awesome!
Bad weather forecast means, we have the water all to ourselves!!! That was the case yesterday on the Lagoon and the weather was not bad at all for sight fishing.
Another cold front has passed through Central Florida and the temps have dropped a bit over the last few days. Along with the cooler temps is a bit of wind. However, the fishing has continued to be good on Mosquito Lagoon. Just challenges your casting accuracy!!!
Yesterday I fished with Connie and Gary from Washington, DC. The winds were a little strong for fly casting. so the Lt. tackle rods were put to good use. We had high sun most of the day, which allowed us to see lots of nice Redfish on the flats.
This was their second trip to Mosquito Lagoon fishing with me and Gary was out for revenge. Last year the Redfish got the best of him and this year he was clearly the winner! Gary made some excellent presentations to tailing fish and had some explosive hook ups in mere inches of water. It just does not get any better then that. They will be back in the Spring to hunt more Redfish for sure! Look forward to it!!!
Sight fishing with the fly rod is as good as it gets right now, so get your day booked! Hope to see you on the front of my Maverick soon!
We all dream about days that look like this out on the flats. Slick calm, high sun, and Redfish tails as far as you can see!!! These days happen quite often and I have started a contact list for those local and not so local fly fishers, that would like to be notified when the weather forecast looks perfect, so they can book a trip. If you are interested in getting on this list, please give me a call or email. For those of you that can do a short notice trip, it allows you to pick the primo days! I can be reached by phone: 321-412-3438 and email: flyfishorlando@gmail.com
I also have gift certificates available for my guide trips and my "On the Water - Sightfishing School" Give the gift of fly fishing this Christmas!!!! That favorite angler in your life, this maybe you, would really appreciate such a gift.
Have a great Holiday Season and I look forward to seeing you on the front of my Maverick soon!!!
Yesterday the old NORTH wind was blowing right down the middle of Mosquito Lagoon. Makes it tough for accurate casting, even with the spinning rod. Steve and Mark found this out first hand. We had lots of shots at fish and some good chasers, but no fish to the boat yesterday. These guys were in town for a sales meeting and organized a group to hit the Lagoon. We had three boats on the water and one boat did land a nice Redfish and a trout.
Thanks guys for booking your trip with us!!! If you are headed down to the Orlando area for a conference or meeting, we can always book multi-boat trips. It is a great alternative to the golf course, just 45 minutes east of the Convention Center and Disney.
Well, I finally got all my guide staff from Michigan, Jamie, Dave, and Bear, to head down for a few days of sightfishing on Mosquito Lagoon. We could have not timed their trip better. The weather has been perfect, very little wind and the sun has been shining. Sure beats the snowy 20deg weather they left back in Northern Michigan.
Day one started out with a bit of wind in the morning out of the Northeast, so it was back to the sheltered shorelines of the Lagoon. The fish were working the shorelines and busting small baitfish. We had lots of great shots at fish and Jamie was the hot rod on day one. Two very nice Redfish on fly, his first ever!!!
The other boys had fish on and off but none to the boat. Day two was a different story!!! As we pulled into my favorite ramp yesterday morning, we were blessed with slick calm conditions and lots of sun. This means one thing, tailing Redfish!!!! Man did we ever see the tails. We chased tailers for six hours straight and did not even leave our first spot. These guys fished Mosquito Lagoon at its finest.
Bear was up first and had several shots at nice fish. Finally it all came together and it was fish on. This fish put Bear into his backing a few times.
Jamie was up next and it was not long till he was hooked up. He made a beautiful presentation with one of my favorite crab patterns.
Dave headed to the bow of the boat with several tails out in front. He had two huge fish blow up on his fly, but no takers. Then he made the perfect cast, strip, and fish on!!! However my camera ran out of batteries so no photo. Bear got a shot on his camera so there is proof coming!!!
It was an awesome couple of days with some of my best friends and fellow guides. Thanks for all your hard work during the 2008 Season and look forward to a successful 2009.
As you can see the fishing has been very good. Get your trip booked today and enjoy some of the best sightfishing of the season.
What a week of fishing we had here on Mosquito Lagoon. The weather has been perfect for sightfishing with the fly rod. Crystal clear water. high sun, and tailing fish on the flats. Does not get any better then that!!! Chuck and Charles from St. Cloud, FL joined me one day last week for some sightfishing. These guys hit it perfect. It was not 20 minutes after we got to our first spot, the Lagoon just slicked out, and the Redfish tails were everywhere. Chuck made some great presentations with his crab fly and the fish were all over it!! Chuck had three nice hook ups, however all three busted him clean off. No Redfish to the boat that day, but we were sure close. Charles did however catch this very nice Sea Trout!!!
Clark Keator also joined me on the Lagoon last week. This was Clark's second trip to the Lagoon this month. It was revenge time for him, as his last trip was blessed with 20 knot winds straight out of the North!!!
From the moment I set the boat down on the first flat we were in fish. This time of year with the cooler temps, the fish like to get real skinny when that sun starts to warm the water. The shorelines were just loaded with cruising and tailing fish. Also saw a good number busting small baitfish on the shorelines. After several shots at nice fish Clark connected with his first Mosquito Lagoon Redfish on fly.
It is awesome to be a part of that experience!!!! We had several more shots at fish that day and Clark hooked another nice fish, but he busted off. As the day came to a close, the winds picked up and we headed back to the ramp. Another great week at the office.
The fishing is very good right now and I have dates available. The right combination for sure!!!
This was the view yesterday as I poled a flat I had not fished in a couple of years. There is so much water here it is tough to fish it all. Temps were a bit on the cool side yesterday, but the fish were all over the flats warming up in that sunshine!.
Still quite a bit of bait along the shorelines, but the fish should be keying in on shrimp and crabs real soon. I have been tying up some of my favorite shallow water patterns, getting ready for the winter fishing.
See anything wrong with the picture above???? You are not in it!!!! Take a day and come fishing. I did not see one boat yesterday as I worked this flat. Look forward to fishing with you.
Yesterday I had the pleasure to fish with Stuart from Hampshire in the UK. He was in town for a sales meeting and had to experience the world famous Mosquito Lagoon. He could not of picked a much better day to be on the water. We had fairly light winds and good sun most of the day. The right combination for sightfishing here on the Lagoon. As you can see, it did not take Stuart long to hook up on his first Redfish of the day.
We had lots of great shots at fish cruising, laid up on the shore lines, and also saw a good number of tailers throughout the day. Stuart hooked up on several fish, but a good number of them spit the hook. He ended the day with two Redfish on fly, which is an awesome day in any fly anglers book!!!
Nice work Stuart and I look forward to fishing with you again on your next trip to Orlando. The conditions look great for the next several days, so book your trip today. Gotta get out and fish!!!!!
Yesterday, we had a two boat trip on the Lagoon and man was the fishing tough. Tom, Marta, Clive and Suzanne made the trip over from the Tampa area to do some sightfishing with the fly rod. The weather was suppose to be 80deg, sunny, and winds out of the North at 10knots. Well when we got to the water the wind was howling and no sun.
We headed out and did find some shelter but the water was a bit off color and it was hard to see. We did find some fish but we were right on top of them before we could get a cast off. Rough day for sightfishing but they sure enjoyed our favorite cove for lunch!!!! These guys will be back in better conditions for sure.
Take a look at your calendar and book your trip today!!!!
The change in seasons always gets these Redfish on the feed. Every year after our first little cold front the Redfish in Mosquito Lagoon go crazy!!! This week was a good example of that very thing. These fish were soooooooooooo aggressive and just hammered a well presented fly.
One day last week I fished with TJ Bettis, owner of Orlando Outfitters. It had been a while since we last fished and it was time to put him on some fish. OH MY!!!! did we ever find the fish. This was TJ's first fish of the day and then...
These fish were all tight to the shorelines cruising with their backs out of the water, busting bait fish, and some were just laid up. It was one of best days of sightfishing I have seen in a while.
It was so good I had to get in on some of the action!!!! You know it is that old saying " Gotta get out and fish to experience those magical times" Conditions are perfect for sightfishing with the fly rod so take a day away from your busy life and come fish with me. I still have dates available in November and December.
This is the way I wish everyday was for all of my clients, slick calm, clear water, and tailing redfish!!! Today was a dream day on the Lagoon as the winds laid down and the sun remained high in the sky. The perfect combination for sightfishing here on Mosquito Lagoon.
My friend "Tiki" Tom joined me for a day of scouting and man did we find the redfish today. The winds kept me off the water for a couple of days and I wanted to check out some areas I had not fished in a while. I shut the boat down just shy of the edge of the flat, poled about twenty feet and we saw our first redfish of the day. It was not long and Tom had his first fish of the day on the line, a nice one at that!!!
Tom has come a long way in the years we have been fishing together and I will convince him yet to pick up the fly rod. He is ready up the challenge!!!!
Water levels continue to drop and water was crystal clear in most of the areas we fished today. Makes for some of the best sightfishing of the season. I still have dates prime dates available in November and December so book your trip today.
As the waters of Mosquito Lagoon begin to drop to late Fall / Winter levels, the fish will begin to school up and head to their favorite haunts. The backcountry is still fishing good and the fish are cruising the shorelines busting baitfish. The baitfish will head out and the Redfish will head to the grass.
Soon we will be switching over to small crab and shrimp flies for tailing Redfish on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. A few of my favorite flats have now reached the perfect water levels for seeing tailers.
Yesterday I fished with Clark from Windermere, Florida. The weather conditions were a bit tough, as we had 20 knot winds and mostly cloudy skies. Not so great for sightfishing with the fly rod. However, it was a great day to work on fly casting in the wind. We did see a lot of fish, but we were right on top of them before we could see them. Clark stuck it out and had few good shots at fish, but none to the boat today. He will be back on the water soon in better weather conditions for sure!!! Looks like the weather is going to break on Sunday, so give me a call to book your trip. I still have dates in October and November!!!!
Redfish in the backcountry has been the theme for the last few weeks. With the high water levels the fish have been spread out and cruising the many mangrove islands of Mosquito Lagoon. This week we have seen all kinds of weather. Sun, rain, calm, winds, and sometimes all in one day. Fly casting has been a bit tough on some days, so the light tackle rods are seeing some use. I fished with David Murch from Oklahoma this week and we had lots of great shots at Redfish on the fly. David made some very good presentations and even had three Reds eat the fly, but no hook-ups. It was an awesome day on the water with a super nice guy!!!! Thanks David.
I also fished with Mike and his father in-law Gary this week. These guys stuck it out on a tough weather day and were finally rewarded with Redfish and Seatrout. Mike really wanted to catch a Redfish on fly, but the winds were just to strong. We will get you one on fly for sure on your next trip.
I will be heading to Michigan this coming week to chase wild trout and spend some time in the North woods hunting Grouse and Woodcock. Then it will be back home to the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. I still have the following dates available in October - 24,25,27-31. Book your trip today!!!
Temperatures are cooling off a bit here in Central Florida and the redfish are loving it. Good schools of mullet have been on the flats and the fish have been keying in on this bait activity.
Mr. Kincaid and his son Chris joined me on Mosquito Lagoon for some sightfishing with the fly rod. Both of these guys are good fly casters and we had lots of great shots at redfish. The morning started off with light winds and lots of redfish on the mullet pods. Chris tied up some awesome mullet patterns and it did not take long for his Dad hook up on the first fish of the day. We had a great time chasing these redfish in real shallow water!!! I look forward to fishing with you guys again soon.
I still have some prime dates available in October. Oct 7,11,12,24,25,27-31. No better time to hit the water. Look forward to fishing with you!
Well.... tropical storm Hanna put a hurting on my charters this week. Not knowing exactly where she was going to go, I had to make the tough call of canceling the three day trip of one of my great customers, Mike from Ohio. Turns out that Hanna went way east of us and the weather has been awesome.
Hit the water this morning with one of my fishing buddies, Tom, and started the day off with a nice Mosquito Lagoon Snook. Tom was throwing the fly rod at snook and tarpon just murdering bait. There was bait flying three feet in the air. Tom hooked up on a nice snook on fly, but a couple good head shakes and it was all over.
Then it was off to the backcountry of Mosquito Lagoon. With the high water, the Redfish are all over the many islands and shoreline of back forty! We had lots of shots at fish today and it did not take Tom long to hook up on his first Redfish. This guy ate a nice little crab pattern Tom ties.
I was up next on the front of my Maverick. We did not go fifty feet and I saw a nice fish working the shore of this island. I laid a cast three feet in front of that fish, two small twitches and he hammered that crab fly. It does not get any better then that!!!
What a great morning on the water!!! Looks like Hurricane IKE is going to be west of Central Florida, so the weather should remain good next week! Mike, sure wish you could have made the trip... next time we will get you that inshore grand slam (Redfish, Trout, Tarpon, Snook).
Finally got the new boat out after tropical storm FAY and we caught fish on it's maiden voyage. My good friend "Tiki" Tom joined me for a lot of motoring around and a little fishing. Gotta break in that new motor. Tom is a great angler with the spinning rod and it did not take him long to hook up on his first and second Redfish of the day. Mosquito Lagoon is really high with all the rain that FAY dropped on us. The fish are all over the WAYYYYY back country. Fished some areas that I have not fished in a few years.
Yesterday I fished with Kevin, one of my good local clients. This was Kevin's second trip to Mosquito Lagoon with the fly rod and he came so close to getting his first Redfish on fly. We had shots at lots of fish in shallow water and had several chase the fly, but no takers. Presentation is everything in the super clear, skinny water!!!! Kevin's casting and fly presentations really improved throughout the day and right at the end of the trip he made a great cast, strip and a fish on and off. Just as the fish ate the fly, he lifted his rod tip and pulled the fly out of the fishes mouth. Oh.... what fun!!! It was great day on the water and Kevin will be back on the front of my Maverick soon!!!!
The fishing on Mosquito Lagoon is very good right now. So get your trip booked!!! I only have a few dates left in September - 25,26,27,29 and October is booking up. Fall fishing can be some of the best of the year.
Well, my new boat is in the garage and ready to hit the water. As soon as this wonderful weather we are having has pushed through I will have it on the water.
The east coast of Florida is getting pounded by this tropical storm as I write this email. We are getting some much needed rain, however it would be better spread out over a few days instead of a few hours. The Lagoon should be great shape with the added water. The Redfish will be way up in the backcountry looking for stuff to eat. I can not wait to get back on the water.
The fishing should be very good here in a few days... so book your trip today. I still have the following dates open this month 27th, 29th, 30th.
Well... The deal is done!! I am officially on the Maverick Pro Guide Program. It feels great to be working with the best flats skiff manufacturer on the market. Yes, the photo above is a picture of my new 2009 Maverick HPX-T in the production process. I can not wait to get this boat out on the water!!
Here is a photo of the top deck in the final stages of production. Below is the hull just out of the VARIS process.
Just got an update from Maverick today and it looks like I will take delivery on the 19th of August. I am counting down the days
The fishing on the lagoon has been very good this week. Still lots of tailing fish in very shallow. I fished with Sam from North Carolina early this week and had lots of shots at over-slot Redfish in inches of water. The snook and tarpon are still around in good numbers and should remain well into September.
Take a look at your calendars and get your trip booked today!! The new Maverick will be ready real soon to hit the water!!!
This was the start to our day today. Amazing!!! So was the sight fishing today. As I mentioned in yesterdays report, Glen from Orlando joined me today for one of my instructional charters. Glen went through the fly fishing school at Orlando Outfitters and wanted to keep pushing forward in this sport. We worked on some casting, fly delivery techniques, stripping techniques, and then it was time to find some fish. Man did Glen hit is good for his first saltwater fly fishing trip ever!!!! We had tailing fish for three straight hours. They were just stacked on one of my favorite morning flats. Glen made cast ,after cast, after cast and they kept getting better. Then the moment of truth. Glen made the perfect cast to a tailing fish and he hammered a crab fly. Game on!!!
Then the fish fighting lesson began. Glen handled this fish very well and to the boat it came in good time.
What an experience for a first time fly fisher!!! Nothing like time on the water to get your education. You just can not teach this stuff on the lawn. Off to the next spot. It was not two minutes and Glen made another great cast to a cruising fish. This fish also hammered the same crab fly.
This fish however was a little camera shy at the boat. Well....all I got to say is Glen is hooked!!!! He will never see the world the same. For better.. for worse. Gotta love this sport.
Wess just got me the photos yesterday and here they are. Gotta love Black Drum on the fly. Some days these fish can be very tough on fly!!! They were all over that well placed crab fly.
I will back on the water tomorrow teaching this fine sport of Saltwater Fly Fishing to a new fly angler. Hopefully we will have a few photos to share of Glen's first outing with the fly rod. The flats have been very good to us this summer, so set aside a day to come fish with me!
Slick calm mornings are the norm here on Mosquito Lagoon. It has been a few weeks since my last report as I have been traveling North to chase a few trout with my clients. I am back and the Redfish stalking continues. With the slick calm mornings we have been able to see every fish on the flat. Right now we have some of the best sightfishing conditions of the season.
Today I fished with Wes from South Carolina and he had some major fish karma going on. The day started out with multiple shots at Redfish and a huge school of black drum. Wes landed three nice black drum and one redfish on fly. We then went to a couple of my favorite spots for snook and tarpon. The snook would not come out and play, but the tarpon were game. Wes had four nice tarpon role on his fly, but no silver to the boat today. My camera died first thing in the morning, so no photos on my camera today. We did get some nice shots on Wes's camera and I will post them when he emails them to me.
The fishing is very good right now, so make some time in your schedule to hit the water. Hope to see you on the front of my Maverick soon!!!!
I usually do not post all the great emails I get from my clients, but the one I received today from Bryan, who I fished with yesterday, was pretty special. So I thought I would share it with everyone. It is the wonderful people that I get to fish with that make my job so AWESOME!!!!!
Capt. Todd and Others
My first experience with flats sight casting to redfish was yet another example of why fishing on the fly is my passion.
With more than 10 years of experience on fly, I was presented with well over a hundred opportunities at tailing and cruising redfish with not much more than a few tugs and one fish that took my fly but was lost with a bad hook set.
After 8 solid hours of ripping my fly line through heavy gusts, I sat down defeated for the day. My brother was on spin and caught 8 Reds and one sea trout and I picked up a spin real for the pole back to the channel and caught two reds.
We loaded up and thanked Todd for a wonderful day (The Space Shuttle was Amazing)! With my head hung low, frustration and exhaustion set in. I was excited for my brother, who really has never fished before, but was still playing every cast and presentation over again in my mind.
My brother said something that brought my head up and put a smile on my face. He said,
"I am amazed at your perseverance. you threw that line for 8 solid hours without catching a fish. I could never do that." While I would never spend hours on end mastering the six strings on the takamine like my brother, I realized a lesson my father always told us boys. Nothing worthwhile in life is free or without sacrifice.
I have a passion for this sport because it is so difficult, otherwise it would just be a hobby. Jason, Myself, and the allusive Red fish will be back on the
flats of Mosquito Lagoon very soon with Capt. Todd hunting for the hook up of a lifetime.
Bryan and Jason from Knoxville, TN joined me today on Mosquito Lagoon. It was a special day indeed as we experienced another picture perfect Space Shuttle landing. Talk about impressive.
Bryan is an avid fly fisherman and was hard at it today to catch his first Redfish on fly. Bryan had great shots at tailing and cruising fish, but it just was not in the cards today. He had some great casts and presentations but the fish were a bit spooky in super skinny water. However.... just a bit later we hit the jackpot of Redfish and it was not long before we had ten nice Redfish and a Trout to the boat. Nice work guys and I look forward to fishing with you again.
It was another perfect day at the office. Now it's time to kick back and enjoy my first fathers day!!!
I should say the perfect days!!!! Jay, Jake, Don, and Scott joined Capt. Tim Masten and I for two days of sightfishing on Mosquito Lagoon. These guys had two of the best days of the season so far. Just absolutely beautiful out on the water. Yes... the fishing was good as well. These guys had shot after shot at nice Redfish and some huge trout. The two day mini tourney was full of catching!!!
The fish of the week so far, was this gator trout caught by Jay in 6 inches of water. This giant was tailing up a storm and Jay made the perfect cast!!!
This was the first trip to Mosquito Lagoon for these guys and they will be back again for sure this year. An impressive fishery indeed. I have a few dates still available in July and August so book your trip today.
Just got back from the Au Sable a couple of days ago and a great trip it was. Lots of good trout fishing on the fly going on in the North. However, that means it is also time to hit some of my Snook and Tarpon spots. Hooked up with my fellow guide and friend Capt. Tim Masten for a day down South. First spot of the day and they had me in the Mangroves already!!! Jumped out of the boat and after the fish I went. Got lucky again!!!
We also found some nice Redfish and Tarpon. Landed two nice Redfish on fly and jumped one Tarpon. We had a great day of scouting some new water. The fishing just keeps getting better as the weather patterns stabilize. Super calm mornings have been the norm lately.
Take a look a those calendars and book your trip today. Look forward to fishing with you!!!
It has been a couple weeks since my last report and I am glad to say that we have been seeing hundreds of nice Redfish on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. That is the beautiful thing about this fishery I call my office. We are blessed with lots of great shots at redfish and big sea trout.
This was the case for Brett and Jeff from Denver, Colorado. These guys had two great days of chasing redfish with a fly rod on the shallow grass of Mosquito Lagoon. The fish were a bit spooky and picky this week, but we finally got one nice Redfish to eat a crab fly. Brett also made a beautiful cast to a huge gator trout, hooked up, and we lost him at the boat. That fish was pushing 10 lbs plus. Bummer we could not get a photo of that beautiful fish.
I also had the pleasure to fish with Mike and his son Josh from North Carolina. The day was a bit tough with windy conditions and clouds. However, Josh was just hammering the sea trout. Mike stuck with the fly rod and got one small sea trout on fly, but the Redfish were elusive on that day.
All the way from Spain, Gaspar was in town for a medical convention and had to get away for a couple of days of fishing. The wind was tough the two days but we did have lots of shots at tailing and cruising fish. It was just hard to get the fly right in the strike zone.
Gaspar did catch a few nice sea trout on fly like the one above. He had several nice redfish follow his fly but no takers. He will be back in 2010 for another shot at his first redfish on fly.
David and Scott from Michigan were also in town for the same medical convention. These guys fish with me in Michigan and wanted to give the saltwater sight fishing a try. They were greeted with tough weather for sightfishing. Winds were blowing 15 plus and no sun. We did have shots at redfish but it was tough to get the fly on target. The light tackle rods came out after a while and we did catch nice sea trout.
All and all it was a great couple weeks on the Lagoon and the weather is really shaping up. The warm temps are here and the calm morning have started this week. I will be heading to Michigan for a few days of chasing trout and then back for some more redfish. I love my job.
Busy week for me as I just got back from chasing trout in Michigan. Thursday I headed down to Ft. Pierce, Florida to check out the Maverick Boat Company. I have been accepted on their pro-guide program and I wanted to meet a few guys at the Factory. I also wanted to see how these high quality boats were manufactured. Right now I am fishing a 2003 Maverick HPX-Tunnel skiff and with the recent promotion to the guide program it is time to upgrade to a 2009 Model.
I met with Charlie Johnson, the director of Marketing and Promotions at the Maverick Boat Company. He gave me wonderful plant tour. We walked through the entire manufacturing process and Charlie explained every advantage these boats have over the competition. WOW... all I can say is these guys have it dialed in!!! Now I know why I love my HPX-T so much.
The VARIS infusion process is very cool and with no materials that can rot, these boats are built to last. The fit and finish was very nice as well. Check out the new Maverick Micro-Skiff. I really wanted to see this new boat. Now I just have to figure out if I want to fish this new boat or the 2009 Tunnel.
It was great first trip to Maverick and I really look forward to working with these guys in the future. It is always great to see good companies working with guides to help improve and develop their products. That's the way you build the perfect boat!!!
I will be on the water the next few days, so more fish photos to come!!! Good day and good fishing.
Today I fished with Mark and his son Jeff from Michigan. This was their first time fishing the saltwater flats and they picked it up very quick. It was not 30 minutes into the trip and Mark hooked and landed this real nice Redfish. As I pulled this fish out of the water I noticed it was missing part of it's tail. Crazy!!! I am sure this fish had a very close encounter with Mr Dolphin.
We had lots of shots at Redfish today. The wind picked up mid-morning and made it a bit tough to get the lure right where it needed to be. The mix of sun and clouds also made it a little harder to see the fish. However, we did manage catch three nice trout including this gator.
It was a pleasure spending the day with you guys and I look forward to your next trip to Mosquito Lagoon. I still have a few dates open for May and June so give me a call or email to book your trip.
After a week in the North chasing some wild trout, it was very nice to see the sunrise on Mosquito Lagoon. Today I fished with one of my favorite clients, John from Winter Park, Florida. The forecast for the morning was 5-10knots out of the southeast and it was more like 15knots when we hit the water. Made it a little tough to see the fish with the lower light conditions and the chop. As the sun came up we had some great shots at cruising fish and a few tailers as well.
We also saw some huge trout in the sandholes. However, they were a bit spooky by the time they were in casting range. No fish to the boat today, but we had a great day casting to a ton of Redfish in very shallow water.
Well.... today I saw one of the most amazing things of the season. John and I had just jumped up on plane, heading to our next spot, and all of a sudden just to the left of us a HUGE Tarpon free jumped at least 6 feet in the air. OH MY!!!!! Looks like I will be at the vise the next few days tying up some of my favorite Tarpon flies. It was awesome!!!!
Gotta get out and fish with me soon! Take a look at those calendars and book your trip today!!! Look forward to seeing you on the front of my Maverick.
I fished the last three days with one of my long time clients, Mike from Ohio. This was Mike's second trip back to Mosquito Lagoon and he timed it absolutely perfect. The winds were very light, the temps were in the mid 80's, and the Redfish were everywhere!!!!
Mike is an excellent fly angler and has fished all over the world. He finally said after day two, "Mosquito Lagoon is one of the most amazing fisheries I have ever experienced". We had shot after shot at tailing fish every day. Mike had several hook-ups each day and landed two very nice fish. We also had great shots at some black drum and monster trout. Oh, he also landed this nice puffer!!!
It was an awesome end to a very productive week on Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon. I have a few dates open this coming week, so take a look at your calendars and book your trip today!
Rusty and Ken from Michigan joined me today for their first trip to Mosquito Lagoon. We had pretty light winds today with high sun, which made for great sightfishing. Sure was nice to have that wind lay down today. This was Rusty's first time fly fishing the shallow flats and he picked up on this game quick. It was not 30 minutes into the trip and he had his first fish on fly!! What a great fight as this fish (above) took him well into the backing a few times.
We had lots of good shots at fish today. The fish were really on the feed this afternoon. We saw lots of fish tipped up feeding and tailing. Rusty made beautiful presentation to a tailing fish and it just inhaled Bear's JB Shrimp. A great 20 minute fight and Rusty landed his second Redfish on fly. Awesome fish and great angling!!! Thanks guys, look forward to your next trip.
The weather is going to perfect through the weekend and the fishing should be awesome the next few days. I have some prime dates open next week so give me a call and book your trip today! Life's too short not to get out and chase some Redfish.
It is always a blast to have kids on my boat. I had such a great time chasing Redfish and Seatrout with Katie and Tripp from Orlando. It is such a blessing to be able to share my passion of fishing with kids. We had a great time and caught some fish as well.
The water levels have come up a bit the last couple of days with the late afternoon rains and the change in wind direction. The fish are not as concentrated as they were a week ago, which means we are back to normal fish patterns for this time of year. Still good schools of fish and lots of tailers throughout the day.
Dave and his son Brendan joined me yesterday on the Lagoon. I fished with these guys about four years ago and they finally made it back to Orlando. Started out the morning on a nice little school of fish and got one to take a jerk bait. The fish spooked and off they went to deeper water. We had lots of shots at good schools of tailing fish and a bunch of singles. Brendan had 4 or 5 nice strikes but no hook ups. It was another wonderful day on the Lagoon with a great father and son team. Nice work you guys and I look forward to your next visit.
I still have a few dates in April available and the fishing is very good!!!! Book your trip today!!!
Yes, we did it. Penn hit 3 nice Redfish on fly yesterday We had another beautiful weather day on Mosquito Lagoon. High sun, light winds, and lots of Redfish on the flats. It is funny how two days can be so different with the same conditions. Two days ago we had singles and doubles tailing all over the place and yesterday the fish were all schooled up. We saw a few tailing fish and Penn hooked up on one nice tailing fish as you can see below.
We fished a couple other flats and found fish but they were pretty spooky. So we moved to one of my other secret spots and hit the mother load, a school of hundreds of Redfish. These fish were everywhere in front of us and Penn did an awesome job of casting into the school without spooking them. We landed two very nice fish before the school headed for deep water.
It was truely another amazing day on Mosquito Lagoon. The weather is really shaping up and the warmer temps have the fish in an eating mood. So, get your fly gear together and give me a call!!! I still have dates available for April and May, so book your trip today.
Today I had the pleasure to fish with Penn from North Carolina. This was his second trip down to chase Redfish and we were blessed with slick calm conditions this morning. Our first flat of the day was loaded with Redfish and tails working in every direction. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! It took Penn a few fish to get warmed up and then he made the perfect cast. Two good strips and the fish just pounded my favorite shrimp pattern. What a start to a perfect day on Mosquito Lagoon.
We fished the same flat almost all day. We had lots of singles and doubles tailing as well as some small schools. You could see tails 300 yards away. Penn made another great presentation to a tailing fish and Bear's JB Shrimp got slammed.
An awesome finish to a perfect day on Mosquito Lagoon. Penn will be back on the front of my Maverick again tomorrow and we are shooting for 3 Redfish on fly.
Book your trip today and experience some great sightfishing!
You just have to love slick calm mornings like this photo from the other day. Beautiful sunrise and tailing Redfish as far as the eye can see. That has been the norm the last few days here on Mosquito Lagoon.
Earlier this week I fished with TJ Bettis from Orlando Outfitters and his good friend and customer Mike Wong. Conditions were a little windy but the flats were perfect for seeing tails. We were not on the first flat 15 minutes and TJ had is first fish hooked up on fly.
Mike was up next and he is new to the fly rod. Mike had some great shots at tails, but the wind was bit strong for him. A great experience and with some more casting practice he will soon get his first Redfish on fly. Mike switched to his spinning gear and it was fish on!!!
This was one of three nice Redfish Mike landed that day. When it was all said and done we had 4 Reds on fly and 3 on light tackle. An exceptional day with two very good anglers!!! Nice job guys.
Spring is here and the fishing is really getting good!!! Book your trip today!!
Tommy from Huntsville, Alabama joined me the last two days on Mosquito Lagoon. Tommy came down last year and had to give this sightfishing with a fly rod another try. Yesterday we had all kinds of weather on us. Started overcast, then the rain showers moved in, then the winds picked up to 20knots, the skies cleared and the temps dropped. Needless to say it was a tough weather day. We saw lots of tailing fish during the rain and Tommy had some great shots at Redfish. Good fun
Today we had beautiful weather and much lighter winds. The temps were cool in the morning and the fish did not get active till the sun warmed the water a bit. After that it was game on!!! We had shots at tons of fish today. Tommy had some great follows to the fly and one Redfish hooked up that broke us off!!! Oh he was so close, many times, to landing his first Redfish on Fly. I will be bittersweet when that day arrives!!! Nice work Tommy and I look forward to our next trip.
The weather looks awesome for the next several days!! Give me a call and book your spot on the bow of my Maverick!!!
Today I had the pleasure to fish with Steve from Iowa. He was down for a few days at Disney and slipped away for a day of sightfishing on Mosquito Lagoon. The winds were really tough today for the fly rod but, Steve fished the long rod all day. We had lots of great shots at Redfish from the time we hit the water in the morning.
This was Steve's first time flats fishing and he really pick up on the techniques and sighting the fish quickly. Making that accurate cast was the key today and the wind made it difficult to get it in the hot spot. However, Steve made a beautiful cast on a tailing fish, stripped the fly and as the fish ate the fly, Steve gave it a trout set!!! OH NO!!!! The fly pulled right out of the fishes mouth!!! So close to having his first Redfish on fly!!!
We had a great day and Steve experienced some awesome sightfishing. The only way you get better at this sport is to get out and fish!!! Thanks Steve, it was a real pleasure introducing you to a whole new side of fly fishing in saltwater.
Did I mention we saw Redfish tails all day? I fished with Phil from Michigan yesterday and he experienced sightfishing heaven. We had Redfish tailing all day long. However, the 15-20knot winds made it tough for casting with the fly rod. But Phil stuck with it and had some great shots and a few real nice follows to the fly. No fish to the boat today, but the adrenaline was flowing.
It was good to see the fish back feeding and to their normal ways. Looks like we have a couple more days of wind and then the front pushes through. The winds should lay down by the weekend. I still have some dates available in April, so book your trip today.
Today Shawn and Christina from MO joined me on the world famous Mosquito Lagoon. These two were so much fun. We had lots of shots at Redfish and some nice trout like to one above. Shawn had a nice Redfish on and it came unbuttoned. Bummer We fished some big schools of Redfish, but they seemed to be very unsettled. Both Shawn and Christina made some great casts but they were just not interested in anything with had in the fly box. Had some good follows but they just would not commit.
Shawn and Christina own a fly fishing B&B and guide service on the North Fork in MO, which is very cool. Nice wild rainbows!!! I hope to make it out to see them in 2008. You can check out their website at http://www.taylormaderivertreks.com/ Another beautiful day on the Lagoon with some wonderful people. I love my job!!
Hope to see you on the front of my Maverick soon!!!
Just flew back home on Monday from Detroit, Michigan. I was asked to give a couple of presentations at the Midwest Fly Fishing Show, on Fly Fishing the Orlando Area. It is always great to share this wonderful fishery we have down here.
The day before I had to fly out, I fished with Mike Sturza from Washington State. Mike owns a fly shop out there and was in the Orlando area to watch his son play baseball for a couple of weeks. We had a cold front come through which usually means windy conditions and that day was no exception. Mike is a great caster and it was not long before he had his first Redfish on fly! Mike also hooked up on another nice fish and it broke him off. This was Mike's first time sightfishing the saltwater grass flats and he learned a ton about this type of fishing. Mike enjoyed his trip so much, he joined me again for one last day of fly fishing before he flew back home.
Yesterday we had sightfishing nirvana. The Lagoon greeted us with slick calm conditions and tailing Redfish as far as you could see!!! It was absolutely crazy. Mike had shot after shot at Redfish tails and finally connected with this beautiful Redfish. Crab patterns were the fly of choice as these fish were almost standing on their heads digging for small mud crabs. Mike had two more very nice takes but no other fish to the boat. Great job Mike and I look forward to fishing with you again!!!
The weather really looks good and it feels like Spring is in the air. Book your trip today
The fishing here on Mosquito Lagoon has been awesome the last couple of weeks. The water levels are still really low, which means, all the fish are out of the back country and on the large flats that make Mosquito Lagoon so special. I had the pleasure to fish again with Steve and Tammy from Michigan. This was their first time saltwater flats fishing and what a day we had. Tammy had the biggest fish of the day and what thrill to see her rod bent over to the cork. Steve and Tammy had lots of great shots and big Redfish and Seatrout. The wind made the casting a bit tough, but in the end, they both brought fish to the boat. Thanks guys and I look forward to our next trip!!!
Yesterday, I was joined by Jeff and Lisa from Troy, Michigan for some sight fishing on Mosquito Lagoon. The winds were a bit too strong for fly casting, but the light tackle action was very good. We fished a large school of fish and Lisa landed a beautiful over slot Redfish. Had some other nice strikes, but only one fish took the hook out of that school. The patches of clouds made it tough to see the fish, but when that sun was out we had lots of great shots at Redfish and big Trout. We also saw quite a few tailing fish in the afternoon.
At the end of the day we had two nice Redfish and two Trout on the score card. Another awesome day on the Lagoon with great people!
I have a few open dates next week and the weather looks good!!! Book your trip today.
The weather has been a bit crazy this week. Cool, windy, warm, slick calm, we have seen it all in a 5 day period. Today was no exception. I had the pleasure to fish with Dave from Grand Rapids, Michigan. We started off the day with fairly light winds and overcast skies. Great weather for tailing fish. We did have shots at a few tailers before the wind and the rain arrived for a couple of hours. Found a huge school of reds but they kept just out of casting distance. Toward the end of the trip I hit my favorite afternoon flat and what did we see.... beautiful tails waving us over. Dave made an awesome cast into a 15knot wind and it was fish on!! A great way to end a day on the Lagoon. The weather looks great for tomorrow and the sight fishing should be off the charts.
We were looking for one of these but none to the boat!!!
I had the pleasure to fish with Peter from Virginia yesterday on the Lagoon. He was in town on a business trip in Orlando and managed to fit in a day of fly fishing.
The morning started off cool and with overcast skies. It was really tough to see the fish until we were right on top of them. The fish were just laid up waiting for the water temps to warm up. Finally the skies broke and we did get some sun which is need for sightfishing the shallow flats. Had some good shots at fish over 20lbs. in 2-3ft of water but could not get them to take the fly.
As the day warmed up a bit we hit one of my favorite afternoon tailing flats. Not a tail in sight. We saw a few fish but the wind made it tough to get the cast on target. Just one of those days I guess. This was Peter's first time flats fishing on the Lagoon and he will be back again to get his first Redfish on fly.
Hope to see you on the front of my Maverick soon!! Book your trip today!!!
When the conditions are tough and all you can do is blind cast.... it is a game of numbers. Make as many casts as you can. That was the theme most of the day today. We had a little rain this morning, along with a 10-15 knot North wind. Not the most ideal conditions for fly fishing on Mosquito Lagoon but that is what Matt and his wife Erin had today. We saw quite a few fish today, however we were right on top of them when we did see them. Matt did accomplished his goal today, a redfish on fly. His first of many to come. Thanks guys!!!
Yesterday I fished with Chris from Hilton Head. We had a great time on the water and saw a ton of fish. Chris booked one of my instructional charters and really improved his fly casting. We had lots of great shots at redfish and Chris learned a ton about fishing the crystal clear flats of the Lagoon. After a few hours of fly casting, Chris took a break from the long rod and grabbed a spinning rod for a while. We spotted a nice little redfish tailing and he could not resist a well presented New Penny Exude. Gotta love a bend in any rod!
Looks like the weather for the weekend should be much better then today. I will be on the water tomorrow so check back for an updated report.
Today the Lagoon lived up to it's title. It was insane the number of fish we cast to today. We saw fish almost every minute of the day!!!
John from Winter Park, FL joined me again today on the Lagoon. He could not of picked a better day for chasing Redfish with the fly rod. John is a regular on this reports page and he made it again today with his second Redfish on fly. Nice Job John!!! We had tons of fish tailing and tipping today so the crab fly was the weapon of choice. A great day on the water and fun had by all.
The weather forecast looks great for the next week, so let's go fishing!!! Book your trip today.
We have had a streak of awesome weather here in Central Florida. The temps have been in the 80's and the Redfish have been loving it!! With the warmer water temps the fish have been tailing all over the flat at first light. We have been finding some nice schools the last few days in very shallow water. Great fun
I had the pleasure to fish with John from Dallas TX on Super Bowl Sunday. The Lagoon was like glass as you can see by the photo above. We hit my favorite morning flat and the tails were everywhere!!! This was John's first time sightfishing in the saltwater and he got a great taste of what it is all about. We had shot after shot at very nice fish in a foot or less of water. Needless to say the adrenaline was flowing. No fish to the boat, but we had a great time and John learned a ton about fly fishing in the saltwater flats.
Today I fished with Ron and Joann from Deland, Florida. Another beautiful day on the Lagoon and man did we get into the Redfish today. Every flat we fished today was loaded with happy fish. We found several nice schools and by the end of the day we had two nice Redfish to the boat.
Back on the water early tomorrow so I better hit the hay.
I had the pleasure to fish with some wonderful people over the last couple of days. Mike and Patti from Chicago, IL joined me for a day of fly fishing on the Lagoon. The winds were a bit tough for fly casting, so we switched to light tackle mid way through the day. We saw a good number of fish but with the chop, the fish were tough to see until we were right on them. Had lots of exciting moments and then Patti landed her first Redfish. Great fun!!!
Yesterday I finally had the chance to fish with Allen McMillen from Central Florida Marine, my favorite Maverick Boat Dealer. These guys have a great operation and service department. They keep my Maverick HPX-T in top condition. Anyway... we had an awesome day of fly fishing on Mosquito Lagoon. The day started off with slick calm conditions and tailing redfish.
We were on fish all day long and had shot after shot at very nice redfish. We were fishing very shallow water, which made the fish really spooky. Allen made the perfect presentation and it was fish on!!!
We finished up the day on one of my favorite afternoon tailing flats. This spot always seems to produce no matter what!!! We were there only a few minutes and what did we see.... tails in the air. We picked out the biggest tail we could see and slowly moved in on the fish. Allen casted my favorite crab fly to the tail and it was game on!!! What a great finish to an awesome day in sightfishing paradise. Just does not get any better, great people and wonderful fishing. I hope to see you on the front of my Maverick real soon!!!
It sure was nice to hit the water this morning after a too many days away from the office. We had some monsoon rains early this morning in Central Florida and by the time we hit the Lagoon they had pushed out to sea.
Ray from Michigan joined me today on the flats. We were blessed with very light winds this morning and lots of tailing Redfish. This was Ray's first time chasing Redfish with a fly rod and like all first time anglers it takes a few hours to get in the groove. We had overcast skies for most of the morning which made it a little tough to see the fish, but the tails were waving everywhere. If only I had the helmet cam to show all of you
Mid-morning the wind totally switched from the South to the North and picked up to about 10 knots. Made it really tough to see the fish. The afternoon was soon upon us and the conditions stayed the same. Ray made lots of casts to white sandy spots and finally in the last minutes of the trip hooked up on a very nice Redfish. Within a few seconds that fish had him into his backing!!! Great run and a nice fight. Ten minutes later Ray had his picture taken with his first Redfish on fly. It always puts a smile on my face to see one of my clients get their first Redfish on fly. Nice job Ray.
Just another wonderful day at the office!!!!
Hope to see you on the water soon. This weekend's weather forecast looks awesome. I now have this Saturday available!!! Give me a call and book your trip today.
I spent the weekend at the Central Florida Boat Show giving seminars on the fly fishing opportunities here in the Orlando Area. My first presentation was FLY FISH ORLANDO, which I highlighted both the freshwater and saltwater fly fishing we have here. It was an eye opener for all that attended. My most attended seminar was the FLY FISHING FOR REDFISH program. We really do have the best grass flats in the state for sightfishing with a fly rod. If you have not fly fished on Mosquito Lagoon it is a must for you. Take a look at your calendar and book your trip today.
I would like to thank everyone at Florida Fishing Weekly for the opportunity to educate everyone on fly fishing Orlando and Mosquito Lagoon. If you have not read this magazine, check it out. Great info and articles on fishing here in Florida.
Well.... looks like I will finally get back on the water tomorrow. I have had to cancel several trips over the last week due to high winds and storms. The front has pushed through and the weather is shaping up. The fishing should be awesome the next few days.
Yesterday we were greeted with cool temps on Mosquito Lagoon. It was 49 degrees as we left the ramp at 10am. Brrrrrr!!!! We started a bit later to make sure we fished the heat of the day. One of my good clients from Michigan, Mark Gillihan, joined me for a day of sightfishing. This was Mark's first time fly fishing for Redfish and we had tough conditions most of the day.
The winds were right out of the North at 15 plus which made for some challenging casts at Redfish. We did see a good number of fish but they always seemed to move up wind. As the day went on the wind did lay down a bit and the clouds moved out for a couple of hours. Once the conditions improved.. it was fish on!!! Mark made a beautiful cast on a cruising Redfish and he hammered the fly. This fish moved 4 feet for the fly!!! It was and awesome fight in very shallow water. That's the way you end a challenging day on the water. Mark is hooked now!!! You will see him on the reports page again very soon.
If you are going to be in the Orlando area this weekend come and see my presentations at the Central Florida Boat Show. It is located at the Orange County Convention Center. The presentations will be in the Florida Fishing Weekly Booth.
Here is my schedule

Yesterday I hit the water early with the guys from Orlando Outfitters and Brighthouse Networks here in Orlando. We have been filming a fly fishing series for their on demand TV program called Real Outdoors. As you can see by the photo below, we had slick calm conditions, high sun, and tailing redfish all day. We could not have picked of a better day to film a fly fishing show.
John "BooDreaux" Baumann, host of the show, TJ Bettis, and I chased tailing reds for 4 1/2 hours. What a beautiful day on the water. It was fly fishers dream day on the Lagoon.
We had shot after shot at tailing Redfish like the one above, but they were not eating our offering. We switch flies a few times and finally hit the right combination of leader length, fly selection, and stripping pattern. A very small crab pattern stripped very slow was the ticket today. The weather looks great for the next few days so give me a call and book your trip today!!
I am back in Orlando and ready to be on the Lagoon chasing Redfish. I headed up north to Indianapolis, Indiana to speak at a fly fishing show this past weekend. Great show and it is always fun to share new fly fishing opportunities with folks.
Timing for my trip could not have been better. When I flew out late last week the temps here in Orlando were in the 30's. That cold front is going and the temps are back in the mid 70's. Perfect for sightfishing the shallow flats for Redish and Trout.
I will be on the water the next few days so check back and get the latest fly fishing report from Mosquito Lagoon. I will be dreaming of tails like the one below tonight.
Here are the dates I still have available this month. Get that calendar out and book your trip today.
The temps the last few days have been crazy warm. Yesterday it was 84 degrees with no humidity and beautiful blue skies. The winds have been from the South which raised the water levels a bit in the Lagoon. This allowed us to get into the backcountry and chase fish in super skinny water. Presentation was key!!!
Kenny and Nic joined me again for a day on the Lagoon. We had perfect sight fishing weather, slick calm and plenty of sunshine. These guys started off with a bang. Two nice redfish slammed their jerk baits in the first twenty minutes of the trip. They had a few other fish on and off throughout the day, but only two to the boat on this trip. We had lots of exciting moments and a great time on the water. They will be back to battle them again soon!!
Yesterday I fished with Bryant from Orlando. Bryant wanted to get out and chase some Redfish with the fly rod. The conditions were a little tough with the wind and the patchy clouds. However, we saw a ton of fish. Bryant did an awesome job for only his second sightfishing trip. He made several nice casts to tipped up and cruising fish, but no takers. The fish would follow the fly and turn off. Just one of those days!!!! It was a great day on the water and I look forward to fishing with Bryant again soon. He now has the addiction!!!
Have a great New Year and look forward to fishing with you in 2008
Today I fished with Tim Jones from Boston, MA. He came down for a couple of days of fishing and some R&R from his busy schedule. We had very light winds this morning and plenty of sun for sight fishing. Tim's day had an amazing start. We headed south in the Lagoon to our first spot. As we glided to a stop, I grab the 9wt Scott Fly Rod with my favorite chartruse and white clouser. I handed the rod to Tim, grabbed the push pole, and headed up to my perch. As I started to pole, I looked out in front of the boat and there were four Redfish. Tim stripped off some line, made two false cast, delivered the fly to the water, made two strips and it was fish on!!! I could not believe my eyes. One minute into the trip and we have our first Redfish of the day on fly. Amazing!!!
The flats were just loaded with fish today. Temperatures climbed to 80 deg. which warmed the water very quickly on shallow flats. We had lots of shots at cruising fish, laid up fish, and several tails. Only the one Redfish to the boat today, but Tim had a great first day of sight fishing here on Mosquito Lagoon. They say revenge is sweet, and Tim will have another shot at them tomorrow.
Take a look at those calendars and book your trip today.
Had a couple of days off for the Christmas Holiday and it is time to get back on the water. Weather looks awesome for the next few days. Light winds and sun are the right combination for great Sight Fishing here on Mosquito Lagoon.
I have been working on a few new flies the last couple of days for these tailing Redfish. I look forward to getting them on the end of that 12lb leader tomorrow. Small shrimp patterns have been working well in the shallow flats. These fish can be very spooky so I have been fishing longer leaders as well.
Check out this photo we got last weekend on the Lagoon. Beautiful rainbow falling right into the Lagoon. Oh, yes we did find the pot of gold. TAILING REDFISH
Another year is almost gone... Get out and fish. Book your trip today.
I fished today with Penn from North Carolina. What a great sport he was this morning. The weather was awful first thing. Winds blowing 20 knots plus, rain, and cold. Brutal to say the least. As we started leaving the ramp there were boats heading in. Not a good sign. The weather man said that it was going to blow through by 10am and then clear up. Well... 10am came and it got worse, but we still fished. Then finally about noon the skies started getting lighter and then came patches of blue sky, a rainbow, and then tailing Redfish. By 1 in the afternoon the clouds were gone, the wind laid down and the flats came alive. Within 10 minutes after the skies cleared we had our first Redfish to the boat. It is amazing how the game changes when that sun comes out.
Penn is an avid fly fisher and he finally got his first tailing Redfish today here on Mosquito Lagoon. We had several shots at some BIG TAILS and they were all over my new shrimp pattern. Penn hooked up on two other nice fish that spit the hook. Bummer Well it just goes to show you that you never know what mother nature will bring you. You just gotta get out and fish!!!
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you on the water soon. Book your trip today.
Our second cold front of the winter season is upon us. This was the marine forecast for today. SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH MONDAY MORNING. TODAY WEST TO NORTHWEST WINDS 20 KNOTS AND GUSTY. SEAS 4 TO 6 FEET. CHOPPY ON THE INTRACOASTAL WATERS. That means a no go today for my fly fishing clients.
I sure wish we had the conditions you see in the photo below!!! The other evening I had the pleasure to guide John "BooDreaux" Baumann of the Reel Outdoors TV Show on Brighthouse Networks. TJ Bettis from Orlando Outfitters and I are working with BooDreaux on an introduction to fly fishing series for the show. The show will consist of three episodes, Fly Fishing Basics, Freshwater Fly Fishing, and Saltwater Fly Fishing. It should air in a couple of months. We saw 60 plus tailers the other night and a beautiful sunset on the Lagoon. BooDreau had some major buck fever on these fish. Can not blame him for that!!! I still get a serious rush of adrenaline when those tails come up.
Looks like one more day of cold front and then it's back to the Lagoon. Should have those fish in a fly eating mood. I have gift certificates waiting for the special angler in your life. Book your trip today!!!
We were blessed with slick calm conditions first thing in the morning. You can see fish moving for miles in these conditions. Usually... along with slick calm water, comes tailing Redfish. OH YES, we had tails till mid-morning in super shallow water. However, presentation had to be perfect or they would spook. The bite was tough today and we still managed to land two Reds and three trout. Looks like the weather will remain warm through Saturday and the winds will be light. Gotta get out and fish!!!
I fished today with Kenny and Steve from Stuart, Fl. This was Kenny's second trip back to Mosquito Lagoon and these fish knew it. We had lots of shots at Redfish today, but they were soooooooo spooky. Presentations had to be absolutely perfect today. Kenny landed one nice Redfish and three other on and lost them. Steve picked up a nice trout and had a few nice Redfish follows. Well, they say that revenge is sweet. These guys have another shot at these fish tomorrow and I am sure they will get the best of them.
The entire Lagoon is open now, so we will have to fish some of the areas down South tomorrow. Should be plenty of hungry fish.
Book your trip today!! Gift Certificates are available for the Holiday and anytime.
What a beautiful day on the Lagoon. Gary and Connie from Alexandria, VA were lucky enough to experience Mosquito Lagoon sight fishing at it's finest. The winds were pretty calm today and the fish were all over the flats. We had shot after shot on these fish and we had tailing Redfish all day long. The fish were a bit spooky first thing in the morning and as the day went on they were too busy with their heads in the grass to see us sneaking up on them. This was Gary and Connie's first time sight fishing and boy did they learn a lot today. We had a great day with two nice Reds to the boat and one that got away! Nice job you guys and I look forward to fishing with you again soon!!!!
The weather and fishing is fantastic!!! Book your trip today!
Water levels are dropping and becoming crystal clear here on Mosquito Lagoon. The conditions for sight fishing are ideal. Fly Anglers are getting double digit shots most everyday on the flats. The Redfish are really starting to get into their wintertime patterns as the cold fronts start to hit Central Florida. It is time to get out the small crab and shrimp patterns to cast to tailing fish in very shallow water. I love this time of year!!!
I still have dates available in December and January. Take a look at those schedules and book your trip today. I also have gift certificates available for the Holidays or anytime. Give the gift of fishing and an experience of a lifetime.
